Roth IRA CD

A Roth IRA CD is a certificate of deposit invested in a Roth IRA. There are many investment options you can choose as well. However, if you still want a CD for your Roth account, you may wish to have a safe investment for your retirement vehicle.

In general, a CD is considered as the safest saving tool because it offers a predictable fixed interest rate and it's covered by FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) insurance up to $250,000 per depositor.

Therefore, if you plan to go to Roth and search for a safe and stable investment option, a Roth IRA CD may be the right choice for you because it's a combination of both.

In reverse, if you already have a CD account, it may be worth putting it in a Roth IRA to amplify the synergy. With this move, you can turn a general taxable account into a completely tax free account.

Even though a Roth IRA CD has many benefits and advantages, you need to know that it has some disadvantages. Keep in mind that you should choose an investment product based on your investment goals and risk tolerance.

Advantages

  • Guaranteed rate of return Usually, CDs pay higher interest rates than savings accounts or money market accounts. And the rates are fixed so you can predict how much your retirement money will be regardless of the market risk. Generally, the longer you deposit to your account, the more interest you'll earn.

  • Safety A CD is protected by FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per depositor so the security of your money is better than other investment options.

  • Tax benefit You contribute to the account with the after-tax money. However, your withdrawals may be completely tax-free if certain requirements are met.

  • Low maintenance costs In general, there is no or much lower maintenance fee for the account.

  • Easy to understand Banks are everywhere. It's very easy to open an account there. And CDs may be the easiest product to understand for common people.

Disadvantages

  • Low fixed return Instead you choose a low-risk investment, the interest rate you'll earn from the Roth IRA CD may be lower than other investments.

  • Limited control You don't have any control over your investment money, while you may be able to manage your own money with other investment options.

  • Early withdrawal penalty The CD interest rate is depending on a defined maturity date. The deposit terms can be 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 5 years or more. If you cash out the CD before the maturity date, you may be subject to early withdrawal fees. So you have to confirm this with your bank.

  • Minimum deposit There may be minimum deposit amounts to open a CD. Usually, other things being equal, the fixed interest rate is determined based on the amounts you deposit when you open it.
